What is the Relay For Life?

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event. It is a unique, challenging, and fun way that allows individuals from all walks of life to join together to fight cancer by raising money and awareness.

Participants form teams of 10 - 15 people, taking turns walking or running on the track for 24 hours. Teams are organized by friends, relatives, local businesses, hospitals, schools, religious organizations, and civic groups. Each individual is asked to raise a minimum of $100.00, and each team is asked to raise a minimum of $1,000.00.

The Relay For Life provides 24 hours of live family entertainment --  contests, karaoke, fireworks, children's games, and more! Tents are provided, and teams bring food, grills, coolers and supplies needed to enjoy the "party with a purpose!"

In Trumbull County we are pleased to conduct the largest relay in Ohio for the 10th year running. We raise the most money at any single relay in the State! We are recognized Nationally as being in the Top Ten Relays based on similar population groups.

How can we raise money at the Relay?
Anything that is legal. Previous teams have had raffles (Indians and Scrappers tickets, bachelors), Chinese auctions, and food sales. Just remember that all money raised at the Relay must be turned in at the end of the Relay.

If we have a raffle at the Relay, who picks the winning ticket? When? Where?
Teams are free to select anyone they want to pick the ticket. Previously, teams have asked survivors or children. The drawing can take place either in your tent or at the stage. Make sure you pick the ticket with enough time to get your money turned in.

What are the requirements for the banner competition?
There are no requirements for banners. They may be any size or shape; however, the judging may take place from a distance so larger print may be better.

What is the Ms. Relay contest?
The Ms. Relay contest is a beauty contest for men in drag. Contestants appear on stage and introduce themselves. After all contestants have been introduced, they are to collect donations in containers provided by the American Cancer Society. The contestant who collects the most money in a 15-minute period wins.

How much money do I have to raise in pledges?
The team entry fee is $1000, which needs to be turned in prior to the beginning of Relay. Once that requirement has been met, there are no additional pledge requirements. This is a fundraising event, however - do not lose sight that we are trying to raise money to fight cancer.

Can we upgrade our team status from Silver to Gold, etc?
Yes!  In fact we will send out a group to post the new sign in front of your tent. Just bring the additional money to the administration tent.
Silver Level: $2500-$4999
Gold Level: $5000-$9999
Platinum Level: $10,000-$19,999
Diamond Level: over $20,000
Purple Level: over $50,000

How can I purchase a luminary for the luminary ceremony?
Luminary forms can be found in the team captain’s packet, by
clicking here, or on the forms page. Fill out the form and mail it to the American Cancer Society along with your check, or bring it to the Relay.

Do luminary sales count toward our team totals?
No.

I know survivors. How can they become involved in the opening ceremonies?
Simply ask them to come to Relay. There will be a survivors tent where they will be given refreshments and a t-shirt. They will line up to participate in the opening ceremonies. If you'd prefer, you may add them to your team’s t-shirt order, and they will be included with your team's t-shirt order.

How many survivors can I have on my team?
Survivors are always welcome. Survivors may also check in at the survivors tent at the relay prior to the opening ceremony to receive a t-shirt and participate in the first lap. You may order as many survivor t-shirts as necessary.

What kind of designs can we put on our team t-shirts?
These are the t-shirts designed by the individual teams. The t-shirts can be customized any way you like. They must, however, have the Relay logo somewhere on them to qualify for the best t-shirt contest. The logo is included in the team captain’s packet. Although not a requirement for the best t-shirt contest, including the website address, www.trumbullrelayforlife.org may "push" the entry ahead of another shirt which does not include the website address.

How long does each walker have to walk?
There is no limit.  Most teams schedule their walkers in ½ hour or hour increments.

How are laps calculated?
Keeping track of laps is only required by those teams that are participating in the "Most Laps Contest". Team laps are counted on the honor system and the names and lap counts are kept in a notebook provided by Relay organizers. For the Warren Relay, lap counting books will be available at Tent # 86 - Trumbull County Children's Services. Only designated walker’s laps from each team count. Therefore, if four people from a team walk 10 laps between 10PM and 11PM only ten laps count, not 40.  There is only one designated walker; the other three walkers are companion walkers. If a team is competing for "Most Laps", laps need to be reported to the information tent every 4 hours.

What is a companion walker?
A companion walker is a walker whose laps do not count toward the team total. However, their support, encouragement and company are always welcome.

How many companion walkers can we have on the track?
The number of companion walkers is limited only by the capacity of the track. Anyone can walk and we want everyone to walk. Have your friends, co-workers and family join in.

Are there restrictions as to what can be on the track?
Yes, of course. Each school has provided a wonderful facility for us to walk and camp on. We need to keep it in pristine condition so that they will welcome us back. Therefore, we ask that there be no cars or trucks on the field or track. Also, no bicycles, skateboards, scooters, or skates. Strollers and wheelchairs are fine. Additionally, the use of tobacco products and/or alcohol is prohibited. Pets are unfortunately not welcome at this event.

What do I need to do to become a 24-hour walker?
Your team captain can sign you up when he fills out a team registration packet in April.

Do 24-hour walkers ever get a break?
24-hour walkers are allowed a ten-minute break each hour to eat, nap, etc. Also, there is no one walking during the luminary ceremony.

Can 24-hour walker's laps count toward our team total?
Yes.  However, keep in mind that 24-hour walker’s laps will be slower than the average walker due to fatigue. Usually, 24-hour walkers are considered companion walkers.

What is the Relay Kick-Off?
The Relay Kick Off is a party held at the MetroPlex in Liberty on Friday, April 22rd. All Relay teams from the five Trumbull County Relays are invited. It’s a great way to get acquainted with other teams and have fun. There will be appetizers and dancing. Team and survivor t-shirts are distributed at the Kick Off Party.

How many t-shirts does each team get?
Each team gets 15 t-shirts free. Additional t-shirts may be purchased at a nominal fee before and during the Relay. T-shirts can be picked up at the Relay Kickoff at McMenamy’s on April 23rd.

Can there be all-youth teams?
Absolutely. All-youth teams must have an  adult who is personally responsible for the youth team members at the Relay at all times. The kids can be the primary organizers, fund-raisers, walkers and workers. Youth teams must also complete a
youth team supervision form prior to Relay.

How much sleep can I expect to get?
Very little. You’ll be having too much fun.

Does everyone on the team have to stay all night?
Everyone does not have to stay all night, but the teams that have the most fun have very high participation throughout the entire event.

What if the weather is bad?
The Relay goes on. Cancer doesn’t stop when it rains or when it’s cold. Be prepared for anything.  In 1999 the temperature dropped into the thirties at night and Saturday’s weather was in the eighties and gorgeous. One year it never dropped below 60o but the rain started at 6:00am and didn’t stop until 3:00pm. Bring whatever you need to keep going throughout the Relay (rain poncho, shorts, blanket, parka, sunscreen).  Provisions are made for severe weather. If severe weather threatens, listen closely for instructions over the PA system. Everyone's safety is a primary concern.

Who do I contact in case of problems?
Security, EMS and other helpful personnel are always available at the Relay. If you have any problems, contact the representatives in the information tent or any Relay board member. (They will be clearly identified as STAFF).

How can I become a member of the Relay Board?
Contact any board member for information. Board membership involves a one-hour meeting once a month plus whatever time is required by sub-committee duties. Sub-committees include, but are not limited to, logistics, ceremonies, team recruitment, entertainment and contests. Some sub-committees are busier than others at different times of the year. Interested parties may call: 330.841.4970.
